Walt DeTour Scholarship Award

Walt DeTour first found his love for the game in his childhood playing in upstate New York. However, it was truly ignited when his family moved to New Canaan, starting with his oldest son, Tyler, he coached for three years with the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade A teams.  During those years, the team only lost on a few occasions under his tutelage, winning multiple CONNY State Championships.  He ignited and instilled a love for the game in every child he coached that lasted through their college careers and beyond.  He also showed them that it was about fun and sportsmanship, not winning and losing.   Throughout his coaching days and beyond he sat on the New Canaan Lacrosse Board fostering and growing NC Lacrosse for all.  As his three children grew up, he made a point to try to attend every single lacrosse game he could.  He watched his son and daughters win multiple State and FCIAC Championships throughout their High School career.  He could not have been prouder than when his daughter Elizabeth captained the Girls High School team to their first state championship ever.  He was equally proud when his youngest daughter Emily again captained the team to yet another state championship.

Throughout the years, Walt could be seen perched at the top row of Dunning Stadium yelling his heart out, willing the team toward victory, and making sure the referee knew a bad call when he saw one.  Even beyond his children's playing days he could be seen doing the same thing.  To him it was bigger than his children's success, it was about a love for the game, a love for the town, and a love for all kids.   In his memory, the family has created a scholarship fund/award for both girls and boys to carry on his legacy.
